I have been wondering if Great Falls has hummingbirds. I put out a feeder and the liquid has disappeared over a couple weeks.
I, myself, sit perched in front of the big picture window usually stitching away and looking outside regular, but have yet to see a hummingbird this year.
On a scary note, we have had two birds on different days crash into the picture window. They have not died as I have tried to check on them and they hop away and make it up a tree.
In finding this very strange and also telling my husband about it, he put clues together and has determined these birds have been eating some type of berries (they look like small apples) off a big tree in the back yard. Some of the berries must be fermenting and making the birds drunk. He says that he saw this many years ago in his folks yard with some birds "getting drunk".
That was a new one for me and I now know that the birds don't know when to "JUST SAY NO".
Well, in conclusion, I am going to fill the hummingbird feeder up again and patiently wait to see if the hummingbirds will come.
Have a wonderful day! Take time to sit -- listen -- and look at the birds.

I would like to offer a word of causion. If the nectar solution that is currently in your feeder has been there for more then 3-5 days it must be changed now. Here's why. Hot weather can cause the nectar to spoil and cause rapid bacterial growth which is harmful to the hummingbirds.
ReplyDeleteYou should also watch to see if the nectar solution in the appears cloudy or has black mold in it. You would want to change it if either of these things appear.
Thanks Zoe Ann Hinds for this information.
ReplyDeleteThe nectar solution became empty very rapidly and I checked the feeder for leaks but could not find any.
I am using one of those "Original Hummingbird Feeders" with a glass bottle and "Original Instant Nectar" from Perky Pet Products out of Denver, CO.
Also, I have the feeder on a branch of a huge cottonwood tree shading my front yard where I can look out at it.
I did see a small yellow and green bird hopping from one branch to another just the other day, but I don't believe he was a hummingbird.
