Witches Brew

The Witches’ Spell
Act IV, Scene 1 from Macbeth (1606) by William Shakespeare
A dark Cave. In the middle, a Caldron boiling. Thunder.
Enter the three Witches.
1 WITCH. Thrice the brinded cat hath mew’d.
2 WITCH. Thrice and once, the hedge-pig whin’d.
3 WITCH. Harpier cries:—’tis time! ’tis time!
1 WITCH. Round about the caldron go;
In the poison’d entrails throw.—
Toad, that under cold stone,
Days and nights has thirty-one;
Swelter’d venom sleeping got,
Boil thou first i’ the charmed pot!
ALL. Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.
2 WITCH. Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the caldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder’s fork, and blind-worm’s sting,
Lizard’s leg, and owlet’s wing,—
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.
ALL. Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.
3 WITCH. Scale of dragon; tooth of wolf;
Witches’ mummy; maw and gulf
Of the ravin’d salt-sea shark;
Root of hemlock digg’d i the dark;
Liver of blaspheming Jew;
Gall of goat, and slips of yew
Sliver’d in the moon’s eclipse;
Nose of Turk, and Tartar’s lips;
Finger of birth-strangled babe
Ditch-deliver’d by a drab,—
Make the gruel thick and slab:
Add thereto a tiger’s chaudron,
For the ingrediants of our caldron.
ALL. Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.
2 WITCH. Cool it with a baboon’s blood,
Then the charm is firm and good.

Glamour Halloween Witch

Actress/Dancer Peggy Ryan is the beautiful witch in this photograph. I thought it fitting to post her on the Halloween's Eve.
She was an American dancer who starred in a series of movie musicals at Universal Studios, tapping and clowning with Donald O'Connor.
Her parents were vaudevilleians, "The Merry Dancing Ryans", and Peggy joined them onstage before she was two years old. Her singing, acting, and dancing skills were noticed by George Murphy, who helped her get a role in 1937's Top of the Town. Her first pairing with Donald O'Connor was 1942's What's Cookin'?, and they appeared in films together throughout World War II. (Perhaps his most famous performance was as Gene Kelly's friend and colleague in Singin’ in the Rain (1952)).
She was brought back to the small screen to play a recurring role as secretary Jenny Sherman, in Hawaii Five-O from 1969 to 1976.
In later years she trained Las Vegas showgirls in tap dancing. Her last public performance, at her 80th birthday party, was a hilarious song-and-dance routine for her former Universal studio colleagues.
Peggy Ryan continued to teach tap until two days before her death at the age of 80 from the effects of two strokes.

Inexpensive Decorating

I must report how thrilled I was to find a beautiful quilted fabric placemat and napkin set for my table at Goodwill this past week for only $3.99.
Also, the simple layout of the placemat can be used by myself as a reference for me to create others in the future.

I love the garden angel in the fabric as shown here.

Another surpise is that the placemats are reversible with a bright cheery pumpkin pattern on the back. Halloween is just around the corner!!
